This woven tapestry is borne of an imagining of an upending of the way art - and our world – prioritizes the sense of sight. Originally exhibited against an all-white background, this white cotton woven piece with handmade inset wool Grade 1 Braille was a confusing encounter for many. It required viewers to handle the all-white piece in order to perceive it. It required them to get close enough to try to read the inset text and invited them to discern the non-compliant size of the braille dots.

The challenge in the making of the piece was a reflective exercise in considering the strained reliance on sight which enabled me to complete the work at hand.

The poem utilized for this piece is taken from nejma by Nayyirah Waheed which reads: “we return to each other in waves. this is how water loves.”
